About us - The Wild Olive

We opened The Wild Olive in May 2011 having been in the catering industry for the past ten years, owning two hotels in nearby Wasdale.

Italian food

Having a passion for Italian food it seemed a natural progression to open a restaurant specialising in food of that type. We prefer a rustic approach to food, which is reflected in our traditional cooking methods, using high quality ingredients and cooking the pizzas in our authentic wood burning oven. This contributes to the relaxed, informal but bustling atmosphere in the restaurant.

Family restaurant

Having a young family ourselves, we believe that children should be encouraged and welcome to eat out so have included a small, separate playroom in the restaurant to help keep them occupied while parents can relax at the table and other diners without children are not disturbed.

Through the daytime and in the summer, the village play park can be accessed directly from the restaurant and our West facing garden has external seating and tables for sunny afternoons and those really balmy evenings.

Pizza skills

We learned our pizza making skills at Ballymaloe Cookery School in Ireland, taught by Phillip Denhardt. We then continued our training in Tuscany, with a course in cooking Italian food, including pasta, desserts and breads. Emma Davies, a cookery teacher and exceptional ‘foodie’ has provided constant advice and guidance throughout the establishment of The Wild Olive and continues to contribute as the business develops.
